Hello,
we are an insurance broker in Italy. We are heavily focused on open source solutions and are evaluating a CRM/sales_force_automation software right now.
We have an in house experience with php but looking to scale up our systems we consider to outsource development sometime in the future so maybe java or rails could come into the picture.
With this in mind vtiger looks like the place to start from.
Requirements,
- insurance is a recurring business but the type of contracts vary wildly (and related procedures), so we have to keep the DB of our clients in our accounting software. We are already exporting that data, what would be the best way to integrate it into vtiger (persons and opportunities are cleared and reimported with a batch procedure?)
- we obviousldy are a services company with all the differences that are already discussed around the forums. the additional difficulty here is that data gathering is critical, I would say we convert a lead not when we sell something but when a client agrees to give me his personal info and the right to present him with offers, this should be integrated as a simple workflow,
- the gathered data will be pulled back by our accounting software where it is normalized, checked, etc. ( this is simple I guess )
- we currently generate quotes using in house developed software (that uses data in our accounting package) . This is the moste tedious, critical and difficult part of our commercial activity, what is the correct path to integrate our software into the products section of vtiger? This looks like a big job...
- due to regulations the way we contact a client and how we present the various offers is somewhat fixed and we have to keep track of the various steps, we have some of this in the in house developed software, we want to integrate the process with vtiger and the data gathering interface.
Last but not least (although not critical right now) we are a voip shop. Asterisk pbx and softphones. So integrating outgoing and incoming phone calls with vtiger is a definite plus.
All this personalization looks like a serious investment. So we are concerned about choosing the right platform.
How is momuntum for vtiger? I have read all about the sugarcrm story and am quite concerned of their approach to the community. On the other hand I understand the need for them to survive.

Thanks,
I have already seen them and if we go forward we will hear from them.
As I said, we are going to prototype inhouse. And only after decide if/to/what outsource.
That is why I was looking at the community

We're also an insurance brokerage, but in the US. We're also interested in evaluating vtiger, and in learning how much work would be involved in having it be able to support some industry vertical needs.
If you are willing to share notes, please drop me a line on here and lets talk!
