I will have to do a small production deployment before the end of the year. Heeding the alpha status of the upcoming release, I should use the 4.2 series until 5.0.0-beta1 at the earliest.

The state of the 4.2 releases needs to be rectified, preferably before beginning a new release cycle for 5.0. Currently the user needs to install a release file, apply a large patch (which isn't really a patch but some files for overwriting), and then some more files which are termed 'security fixes' for a patch to a release package. I think we're all in agreement that things will be done differently for the 5.0 series, but 4.2 needs a definitive release now.

Vtiger needs to bundle up the definitive version, recommend in the release notes that all non-custom installations migrate to that ASAP. The forums should encourage all 4.2 series users to migrate so that questions may be asked against a uniform release baseline.

Please make a release of the recommended 4.2 series named:

vtigercrm-4.2.3

To signifiy 'version 4.2, third maintenance release'. Please include on the download page tar.gz and .zip release package files:

vtigercrm-4.2.3.tar.gz and vtigercrm-4.2.3.zip

Please remove the executable permissions from all non-directory files in the source package (CVS doesn't help you here).

Finally, please tag CVS at the exact point where these release files are cut, so that a maintenance branch can be left open for any vtigercrm-4.2.3 fixes that may someday necessitate a vtigercrm-4.2.4 release.

Thanks, I'm eager to see a maintenance release. This will in fact be my first vtigercrm production deployment, after about a year of enthused observation (and needling about release management)

This would be much welcomed - I much prefer software to be "little problems fixed, released often" rather than have to live with minor problems which are fixed internally, but not easily packaged up in a release.

I hate to admit that what you have asked for is right and it will be done. My team will be cursing me but I will ensure that I divert that to you! :D !
