Set Fields by passing vlues in through the URL

Is it possible to have fields in an edit screen populated based on values passed in via the URL.

E.g for an action, use the following URL to set a default subject...

http://localhost/opencrm/index.php?action=EditView&module=Activities&activity_mode=Task&_subject=test

Is there any way of doing this as it is at the moment?
