v5.0.4 Several modules not working post install

I have vtiger 5.0.4 running on linux through 1and1. after install I can login but several modules (products,accounts, tickets, contacts, leads) all result in fatal errors. For "accounts" i get

Fatal error: Call to a member function FetchRow() on a non-object in /homepages/16/d146285542/htdocs/vtigercrm/include/database/PearDatabase.php on line 424

any thoughts on resolving appreciated.
