Woo has this been a long day.
Lots of searching and zilch, I have tried
Localhost with and without port#
Hostname same with and without
I am happy to read and troubleshoot
Debian Etch
Mysql 5.0.32-Debian_7etch5-log
PHP Version 5.2.0-8+etch10
Apache 2.2.3
phpMyAdmin - 2.9.1.1-Debian-7 (I think the DB is working, phpma is working)
I have been trying to get the DB to load for hours, no error in the logs

Well,
The devil is in the details.
I missed a php setting and that cost 4 hours.
If you are having a bear of a time, get someone else to look at your settings
you probably missed something :(
