iI am changing the module names in include/language/en_ew.lang but when I refresh, the system doesn't show me the changes. Do I need to make changes else where as well? Similarly I tried in module folder also but could not manage to change module or field labels. Please advice if I need to follow some other steps.

besides the language file at ../include/language/ each module has its own language files. You will need to repeat the changes you made also for each individual language file at the modules.

i am doing that as well, changing the lables in respective modules as well

if you change the contents/language of the pick lists you have to goto settings and edit/save it there once. Everything else should work just by changing the language file.

i have to change module name from contacts to students

Please try to run this in your system setup and let me know the possible mistake I am making.
